It will tolerate a degree of neglect, irregular watering, and light conditions that would finish off a more demanding plant. But tolerating something is not the same as thriving in it. Light level directly determines the plant's growth rate, the intensity of its variegation, and whether it ever sends out the long arching runners that carry those distinctive spiderettes. Understanding what it actually wants, rather than what it will merely put up with, is the difference between a plant that looks tired and one that looks spectacular.
What light level does a spider plant need?

Why variegated spider plants lose their white stripes in low light

Spider plants are one of a very short list of houseplants that actually survive long-term under artificial office lighting alone. Standard ceiling-mounted fluorescent tubes or LED panels at desk level typically deliver 300 to 500 lux. This is below the threshold for active growth but above the survival floor for spider plants. The plant will live, stay green, and hold its basic shape. It will not grow quickly, it will not produce spiderettes, and any variegated variety will fade toward solid green.
