The best part of the job was helping someone choose a plant they would actually keep alive. The hardest part was that the honest answer almost always depended on something I could not see from behind the counter: the light in your home. A pothos that thrives in one apartment sulks in another, and it usually comes down to a single thing, the sun coming through one particular window.
Same plant, different window, a completely different outcome.
I could eyeball it for our regulars. But "bright, indirect light" on a care tag means very little when you are standing in your living room, plant in hand, wondering whether it belongs by the east window or the north one. People left with a plant and a guess. Some of those guesses cost them a plant they had fallen for.
I wanted to give every customer something better than a guess. Point your phone at a window and know, before you commit, whether that spot will let a plant thrive, cope, or slowly give up. So I went looking for an app that did exactly that, and nothing read the real sun for a specific window the way I needed. So we built it.
Plant Compass reads the sun's actual path for your exact location and the time of year, then tells you which of your plants suit each window or garden bed. It is the tool I wished I could hand to every person who walked into the shop, and, honestly, the one I needed myself.
