"Low light" on a plant label usually means "tolerates moderate indirect light." It rarely means "thrives in a dark hallway." No plant grows in total darkness, but a handful have adapted to survive on 50 to 200 lux, the light level found near a north-facing window or in a room lit only by ambient daylight bouncing off walls. These are the plants worth trying in genuinely dim spaces.
What "Dark Room" Actually Means in Numbers
Lux is the standard measure of illuminance at a surface. It gives you a way to compare light conditions honestly rather than relying on vague descriptors like "low" or "medium."
Here is what different lux ranges look like in practice:
- 50 to 200 lux: A north-facing room in winter in the UK, or an interior hallway with a distant window. This is genuinely dim. Reading in this light is uncomfortable without a lamp.
- 200 to 500 lux: A north-facing room on a bright summer day, or a room with south-facing windows where you are sitting 3 metres from the glass. This is the range most "low light" plants actually need to stay alive long-term.
- 500 to 2,000 lux: Bright indirect light, such as a well-lit room, near a north or east window in summer, or a few metres from a south-facing window.
- 2,000 lux and above: Close to a south or west window with sky visible; approaching direct light.
Most plants labelled "low light" in garden centres need 200 to 500 lux to stay alive long-term and will not grow noticeably below that threshold. They will not die quickly, but they will slowly decline. Truly dark-tolerant plants can hold at 50 to 150 lux, though growth in that range is nearly zero.
The Honest Short List
These five plants have genuine credentials for surviving at 50 to 200 lux. They will not thrive, but they will hold.
Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). The name is earned. Victorian parlours had no electric light and these survived in coal-fire rooms with only the light from small sash windows. They grow slowly in the best conditions and almost not at all in deep shade, but they will not die. They are one of the few plants where "very low light" is not a euphemism.
ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). The ZZ stores energy in fat underground rhizomes, which act as reserves during periods of low light. It can coast through weeks of dim conditions without visible decline. It will not put out new growth in a dark room, but it will stay looking healthy for a long time before it starts to struggle.
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum). Pothos survives at low light, but it adapts visibly: variegated varieties revert to solid green as the plant maximises chlorophyll, and growth slows dramatically. A fully green-leaved pothos in a dim room is alive but not growing. It is still one of the better choices because it signals its stress clearly and recovers quickly when moved to brighter light.
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata, formerly Sansevieria). Snake plants survive at 50 to 100 lux but barely grow. They are very slow in good conditions; in low light they stop entirely. Their advantage is that they look fine even when barely functioning, and they require almost no water in low light, which makes overwatering less likely.
Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema). The green-leaved varieties, not the red or pink cultivars which need much more light, hold at 100 to 200 lux. What Won't Work
The following plants are commonly sold with "low light" descriptions, but they will slowly decline rather than merely pause in a genuinely dark room. The problem with slow decline is that it can be easy to mistake for thriving; the plant does not die suddenly, it just gets smaller, paler, and less vigorous over many months.
Avoid these in rooms below 200 lux:
- Monstera deliciosa. Needs at least 500 lux for healthy growth. Below that it will stop producing new leaves and existing ones will yellow gradually.
- Peace lily (Spathiphyllum). Peace lilies survive low light but will not flower without at least 500 lux. They look fine, but if flowering is part of the appeal, they need a brighter spot.
- Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). Goes leggy and pale in low light. The variegation fades and the plant stretches toward any light source.
- Calatheas and Marantas. Need consistent humidity and moderate light. Very low light causes their patterns to fade and their leaves to develop brown edges.
- Variegated pothos varieties. Golden Pothos and Marble Queen lose their variegation; Neon Pothos fades to a dull yellow-green.
- Ferns. Most require at least medium indirect light and consistent humidity. Most ferns in dark rooms develop brown tips and drop fronds within a few months.
- Succulents and cacti. These are full-sun plants. Any succulent in a dark room will etiolate (stretch toward light) and eventually collapse.
Any plant with a "medium light" label on its care tag will slowly decline in a dark room rather than dying quickly. This slow decline is what misleads owners into thinking the plant is coping when it is actually using up stored reserves.
The Rotation Strategy
If you love plants that need more light than your dark room offers, rotation is a practical solution. The principle is simple: the dark room is a display space, not a permanent home.
Find one well-lit spot elsewhere in your home, near a south or east-facing window, and treat it as a recovery station. Move plants into the dark room for display stints of two to four weeks, then return them to the bright spot to rebuild their reserves. The plant recovers in light, then goes back on display.
Limit dark-room stints to no more than four to six weeks before a return to bright light. Most plants that would otherwise struggle in deep shade can handle this cycle well, including peace lilies, pothos, and even some ferns during summer when light levels at the recovery station are high.
The rotation approach also makes you more aware of how your plants are responding. A plant coming out of a four-week dark stint that has no new growth and several yellowing leaves is telling you the rotation window is too long for that particular plant.
When to Add a Grow Light
A single full-spectrum LED panel running 12 to 14 hours a day can transform a dark room into a viable growing space. At roughly 20 to 30 cm from the canopy, a decent LED delivers the equivalent of bright indirect window light.
For a hallway or living space, choose a warm-spectrum "plant light" bulb in a standard lamp fitting rather than a purple or blurple horticultural lamp. The purple lamps are more efficient at delivering photosynthetically active radiation, but they look jarring in a domestic space and bathe everything in an odd colour. Warm-spectrum full-spectrum bulbs are somewhat less efficient but perfectly adequate for maintaining the plants on the honest short list above, and they look like normal home lighting.
Set the lamp on a timer. Consistent photoperiod matters more than intensity for stable plant growth. A lamp that runs 14 hours one day and 6 the next stresses plants more than a consistent 12-hour cycle at lower intensity.
UK North-Facing Room Specifics
In the UK, north-facing rooms receive reflected sky light and no direct sun at any point in the year. That reflected light varies enormously by season.
In summer, a north-facing window can deliver 300 to 600 lux at the glass on a bright day. That is enough for all five plants on the honest short list, and for the rotation strategy to work well with a wider range of species.
In winter, a north-facing window may deliver only 100 to 200 lux on bright days, and under 50 lux on overcast December days, which accounts for most of December and January in much of the UK. At that level, the cast iron plant and ZZ plant are effectively the only candidates that will hold without supplemental light. Everything else will be in survival mode at best.

Can any plant survive in a room with no windows?
No plant survives long-term without light. My pothos is still alive in my hallway after a year. Is that normal?
