Rubber plant light requirements: which variety needs which window

Standard green rubber plants tolerate low light. Burgundy, tineke, and ruby varieties need more. Here is the breakdown by variety and which window to use.

The rubber plant (ficus elastica) is one of the more light-flexible members of the ficus family. Unlike its relative the fiddle-leaf fig, which sulks and drops leaves with any light change, the rubber plant is more tolerant. But there is a meaningful difference between its standard green form and the coloured cultivars (burgundy, tineke, ruby, and others) in terms of how much light they need to look their best. Here is the breakdown.

Standard green rubber plant light requirements

Ficus elastica in its standard green form handles a wide light range, from around 500 to 6,000 lux. What that range looks like in practice:

Survival and acceptable appearance (500 to 1,500 lux). This is the range you might find near an east or north window at a reasonable distance from the glass. The plant holds its form and colour but grows slowly. A north window is manageable for the green form where it would be a struggle for most other ficus species.

Comfortable growth (1,500 to 4,000 lux). Bright indirect light from a well-positioned east, west, or shaded south window. The plant produces new leaves at a steady pace through spring and summer and maintains good leaf size and colouring.

Best growth with large leaves (3,000 to 6,000 lux). This range, achievable near an east window with some morning sun or behind a sheer curtain on a south or west window, produces the impressive large-leafed growth the rubber plant is capable of. Leaves regularly reach 20 to 30cm in these conditions.

The green form tolerates a north window better than most ficus species, though it grows slowly there. An east window is the reliable comfortable position for green rubber plants.

Coloured rubber plant varieties and their light needs

The coloured cultivars of ficus elastica have higher light requirements than the standard green form, and the reason is the same across all of them: the pigments and variegation patterns that make them attractive need more light to express and maintain.

Burgundy (also sold as Abidjan). Dark maroon-red leaves. The colouration comes from anthocyanin pigments, which require sufficient light to produce. In a north window the leaves fade toward a dull reddish-green over time. An east or west window is the minimum for maintaining good colour. In brighter conditions the new leaves emerge a deep, almost black-red before maturing.

Tineke. Cream, green, and pink variegated leaves. The cream and pink sections have less chlorophyll than the green sections, which means the plant as a whole photosynthesises less efficiently per unit of leaf area. It needs a bright east or west window to maintain the variegation. In low light, new leaves come in plainer green as the plant prioritises chlorophyll-producing cells over the variegated pattern.

Ruby. Similar to tineke with more pink in the variegation. One of the more light-demanding ficus elastica cultivars. A west or south window with a sheer curtain gives the best colour. In adequate light the pink tones are vivid; in insufficient light the new growth fades toward plain green within a few weeks of emergence.

Decora (the classic broad-leafed form). Similar light requirements to the standard green but benefits from more light for its large leaf development. The decora is the variety most likely to produce the enormous 40cm-plus leaves you see in optimally-lit specimens.

Which window for a rubber plant

North window. Standard green form only. Growth is slow but the plant holds its colour and form through the year. Avoid coloured cultivars (burgundy, tineke, ruby) on north windows; they will slowly fade and decline.

East window. The most versatile position. All varieties handle east well. Morning sun suits the rubber plant without scorch risk, and the light levels through the morning are high enough to maintain good colour even in the more demanding cultivars. Position the plant within 50 to 80cm of the glass for best results.

West window. Good for all varieties. Afternoon sun gives good colour intensity for burgundy and tineke. In midsummer, keep coloured varieties 30 to 50cm from the glass to avoid overheating on very hot west afternoons. Outside of peak summer the west window is an excellent position for any rubber plant cultivar.

South window. Possible for all varieties. Position 60 to 80cm back from the glass or use a sheer curtain. The large leaves of the rubber plant can scorch on direct south window contact in summer, particularly for decora with its very large leaf surface area.

Signs your rubber plant needs more light

Leaves losing colour. Burgundy fading toward dull green, tineke variegation disappearing, ruby losing its pink tones: all of these indicate insufficient light for the pigments. The existing affected leaves will not recover, but moving to a brighter position stops further fading and produces correctly coloured new growth.

Leggy growth with widely spaced leaves. Etiolation. The plant is stretching toward available light. The internodal distance increases and the stem becomes weak. Move it substantially closer to a window.

Existing leaves dropping. Can be light-related in severe cases, though more commonly triggered by overwatering or cold draughts. If light levels are very low and watering has been regular, both factors are likely contributing.

Slow growth even in spring and summer. If the plant produces no new leaves between March and September, it is below its comfortable light threshold. The green form can maintain itself at lower light but will not grow. The coloured cultivars need to grow actively to maintain their appearance.

The no-moving rule for ficus

All ficus family plants, including rubber plants, are sensitive to environmental change. Moving a stable rubber plant to a new position often triggers leaf drop as the plant adjusts to the new light angle, intensity, and temperature. This is less extreme in rubber plants than fiddle-leaf figs (which drop leaves at the slightest provocation) but still happens.

If you need to move your rubber plant, do it in spring when the plant is in active growth and can recover more quickly. Move gradually where possible rather than from one extreme to another. A plant moved from a north window to a south window in one step will experience more stress than one moved through intermediate positions over several weeks.

The practical implication: decide on the right window for your variety before you bring the plant home, position it correctly once, and leave it there.

FAQ

My burgundy rubber plant is turning green. How do I get the colour back?

The anthocyanin pigments that produce the red and burgundy colouring need more light to express than standard green. Move the plant to a brighter east or west window. New leaves in better light will return to the deeper burgundy colour. The existing green-faded leaves will not change back, but the overall appearance improves as new, correctly coloured growth replaces them.

Can I keep my rubber plant in a corner away from windows?

Standard green form: for a few months, yes. Longer term it will slowly decline. Coloured varieties: not sustainably. A position more than 2m from a window in a room with north-facing light provides below 200 to 300 lux, which is insufficient for any rubber plant cultivar over time. Move it to within 1m of the brightest available window.

Why does my rubber plant keep dropping lower leaves?

The most common cause in an otherwise healthy-looking plant is insufficient light combined with overwatering. Lower leaves yellow and drop when the plant is not photosynthesising enough to support its full leaf load. Check the light level and reduce watering to match. Is the rubber plant's sap toxic?
