How seasonal light changes affect your houseplants (and what to do)

Indoor light in December is 5-10x dimmer than in June. Here is how the seasons change what your plants need and the simple adjustments that keep them alive year-round.

Most houseplant care advice is written as if light stays constant year-round. It does not. In the UK, outdoor light intensity can vary by a factor of 10 or more between a clear June day and an overcast December afternoon. That variation is the single biggest reason plants that thrived through summer start declining in autumn, and why a watering schedule that worked in spring leads to root rot in winter. Here is what actually changes, when it changes, and what to do.

What changes and by how much

Day length. UK summer (June) sees roughly 16 hours of daylight; winter (December) around 8 hours. Plants near south-facing windows receive direct sun for 5-7 hours in summer but only 2-3 hours in winter at best.

Sun angle. The sun in December is never higher than about 17 degrees above the horizon in London. In June it reaches 60 degrees. This low winter angle means south-facing windows catch some direct light, but east and west windows catch very little. The angle also creates more shadowing from roof overhangs, nearby buildings, and window frames than you might expect.

Light intensity. A clear summer outdoor day can reach 80,000-100,000 lux. A clear winter outdoor day might reach 20,000 lux outdoors, but indoors that translates to a fraction of what summer light provides through the same window, even when the sky is cloudless.

Total daily light integral (DLI). DLI is the total amount of light energy a plant receives per day: the product of intensity multiplied by duration. Even if intensity were identical, cutting day length in half halves the DLI. In practice both intensity and duration drop in winter, making indoor DLI in December 5-10 times lower than in June. That is the number that determines what your plant can do.

What this means for your plants

Growth rate. Most houseplants slow significantly from October to February. This is normal and healthy. It is not a sign that something is wrong. The mistake is continuing to water and fertilise at summer rates when the plant has effectively shifted into a lower gear.

Watering. Lower light means lower photosynthesis means lower water uptake. A plant that needed watering every 7-10 days in summer may need watering every 2-3 weeks in winter. Overwatering in winter is the most common cause of root rot. Stop when you see it happening and add more light rather than applying a formula.

Fertilising. Most houseplants do not need fertiliser from October to February because they are not growing enough to use it. Adding fertiliser to a plant in very low winter light causes salt buildup in the soil without corresponding growth. Resume in March when light improves and the plant begins pushing new leaves again.

Plant placement. Plants that were fine 60-80cm from a south-facing window in summer may need to be moved right to the glass in winter to receive the same effective light. The inverse square law applies: doubling your distance from the light source reduces the intensity to a quarter.

The four seasonal adjustments

Spring (March-May). Move plants slightly back from where they spent winter. Resume watering at summer frequency when you see new growth starting. Resume a half-strength fertiliser. Watch for the first new leaves as the signal that the plant has shifted back into active growth.

Summer (June-August). South and west windows may need a sheer curtain for shade-adapted plants, which can scorch in direct midsummer sun. Water more frequently as heat increases transpiration. Do not fertilise beyond a maintenance dose unless the plant is visibly growing fast.

Autumn (September-November). Begin reducing watering frequency as growth slows. Move light-hungry plants closer to windows. Stop fertilising by October. This is the transition period and catching the slowdown early prevents the overwatering that follows.

Winter (December-February). Minimum watering (test soil dryness before watering, never on a schedule). Move plants to the brightest window available. Consider a grow light on a timer for plants showing signs of light stress. Accept reduced growth as the season's natural rhythm.

Plants most affected by seasonal change

Most sensitive. Herbs (basil collapses indoors in winter; other herbs become leggy). Flowering plants (most need summer light intensity to bloom). Cacti and succulents (need maximum winter light or they etiolate, stretching toward any available light source). Variegated plants (revert toward green when light drops below their threshold, as the plant redirects energy to more efficient chlorophyll production).

Most resilient. ZZ plant, snake plant, cast iron plant, and pothos are largely unbothered by the seasonal light drop. They slow down but maintain their appearance. These are the plants for genuinely dim spaces.

Medium sensitivity. Monsteras, philodendrons, and brighter pothos varieties survive the seasonal change but show it in leaf size and growth rate. Winter leaves are often smaller and spaced further apart on the stem than summer ones.

Using a grow light seasonally

A grow light used only in winter is one of the most cost-effective plant care decisions available. Run it from October to March on a 12-14 hour timer. This supplements the weak winter light and effectively extends summer conditions year-round for plants directly below it.

The electricity cost for a 30W light running 13 hours a day is roughly 3-4 GBP per month at current UK rates. This is significantly cheaper than replacing plants that decline each winter. Position the light 20-40cm above the plant canopy and use a plug-in timer so you do not have to remember to switch it on and off each day.

The compass can tell you which of your windows actually need supplementing. A south-facing window that delivers 5 hours of direct light in June may deliver under an hour in December. Knowing that number tells you exactly which plants and which positions are candidates for a grow light before any damage sets in.

FAQ

My plant was fine all summer but is dying now it is autumn. What happened?

The most likely cause is the combination of reduced light and continued summer-rate watering. Plants use far less water in low light because photosynthesis and transpiration slow down. Check the soil: if it has been consistently damp, the roots may be beginning to rot. Allow it to dry completely, reduce watering frequency, move the plant closer to the brightest window, and wait. Recovery can take 4-6 weeks.

Should I move all my plants around seasonally?

Only if their current position becomes inadequate. The plants most worth moving are those that need high light: cacti, succulents, herbs, and variegated plants. Move them to the sunniest available window in October and return them in March. Low-light tolerant plants like snake plant and ZZ plant rarely need seasonal repositioning.

When should I start watering my plants again after winter?

Watch for new growth rather than following the calendar. In the UK, most houseplants begin pushing new leaves from March onwards as day length increases. When you see a new leaf emerging, the plant has shifted to active growth and is ready to resume a more frequent watering schedule. Do not restart fertilising until you see at least 2-3 weeks of consistent new growth.

Do plants need less light in winter because they are dormant?

Most tropical houseplants are not truly dormant in winter: they slow down but do not enter a genuine dormancy the way deciduous trees do. They still need light; they just need less than in summer because their metabolic rate is lower. True dormancy applies to bulbs, tubers, and some succulents, which can store energy and survive months with little light or water.

My south-facing window plants are getting leggy in winter. What should I do?

Legginess in winter on a south-facing window means the plant is still not receiving enough light, even in the best indoor position. Options: add a grow light supplement; move the plant as close to the glass as possible; clean the window (dirty glass reduces transmission by 10-30%); or accept a slower, slightly leggier winter and cut back the leggy growth in spring when light improves.
