A voile or sheer curtain across a south or west window seems like a simple fix for sun-sensitive plants. And it is, in the right situations. But the same sheer that saves a peace lily from scorching can starve a spider plant or a pothos that actually needed more light, not less. The question is not whether to use a sheer curtain but which plants belong on which side of it.
How Much Light Sheer Curtains Block
A single layer of standard voile or net curtain blocks 30 to 50 percent of visible light. A denser weave, such as a heavier voile or a double-layered net, can block up to 60 to 70 percent. The key metric is not how opaque the fabric looks to your eye but the transmission factor: how much light actually passes through to the plant on the other side.
Sheers also change the quality of the light, not just the quantity. They scatter direct sun into soft ambient light, eliminating the hot spots that scorch leaves but also reducing the peak intensity that high-light plants depend on. A leaf behind a sheer receives diffused light from a wide angle rather than a concentrated beam from one direction.
The practical consequence is significant. A south-facing window in summer delivers around 40,000 to 80,000 lux at the glass on a clear day. Behind a standard voile, that drops to roughly 20,000 to 50,000 lux. That is still bright by most indoor standards, but it is roughly equivalent to what a large east-facing window delivers without any curtain at all. For many sun-loving plants, that difference is the line between healthy growth and slow decline.
Plants That Benefit From a Sheer Curtain
These plants want bright indirect light. A sheer curtain on a south or west window puts them in exactly the conditions they prefer, and removes the risk of leaf scorch that direct midday sun would otherwise cause.
Monstera deliciosa. Bright indirect light is the sweet spot for monstera. A south-facing window with a sheer delivers that reliably through the growing season, and the diffused light reaches leaves evenly rather than creating sun patches on the outer leaves and shade inside the canopy.
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum). Peace lilies are genuinely sensitive to direct sun. Even a couple of hours of unfiltered south or west sun in summer will scorch the leaves and bleach the colour out of the foliage. A sheer on a south or west window is often exactly the balance they need: enough brightness to support reliable flowering, without the intensity that causes damage.
Calatheas and prayer plants. These are among the most light-sensitive common houseplants. They need enough brightness to support their patterned foliage, but direct sun causes the leaves to curl, fade, and develop crispy margins within days. A sheer on a south window is frequently the difference between a calathea that thrives and one that slowly deteriorates.
Phalaenopsis orchids. Two to three hours of filtered sun through a sheer is close to ideal for moth orchids. They want the energy from light to support flowering, but unfiltered south sun will heat the leaves to damaging temperatures. A sheer curtain moderates both the intensity and the heat.
Begonias. Flowering begonias produce their best colour in the filtered light a sheer provides. They flower well without ever being exposed to the direct sun that would cause them to wilt, bleach, or develop sun scald on the upper leaf surface.
Ferns. Most ferns need some meaningful light to stay healthy, and a sheer on a large south window can provide enough. The key word is large: a big south window behind a sheer delivers more total light than a small unobstructed north or east window. If the south window is modest in size, the sheer may make it too dim for ferns that are already on the edge of their light requirements.
Plants That Should Not Be Behind a Sheer
For these plants, a sheer curtain reduces light below the threshold they need for healthy growth. Many of them are already struggling with the light levels available in a typical home, and adding a sheer makes the situation worse.
Cacti and succulents. These plants are already among the most under-lit in UK homes. They evolved in environments with intense, unobstructed sun for most of the day, and indoor conditions rarely replicate that adequately. A sheer reduces what is already marginal light below the threshold for compact, healthy growth. Place them on a sheer-free south or east window and remove any obstruction between them and the glass.
Citrus trees. Citrus need maximum available light to support fruit production. In spring and summer, a sheer reduces what they receive, and in autumn and winter it becomes actively harmful. UK winter light is already too low for citrus to thrive; a sheer in October or November can push them into effective dormancy whether you intend it or not.
Herbs. Basil, thyme, and rosemary want full, unobstructed direct sun. A sheer across the window dramatically cuts their growth rate and flavour production. In culinary terms, a sheer-filtered herb harvest yields less and tastes milder. Place herbs directly at an unobstructed south or east window with nothing between the plant and the glass.
Spider plants and pothos in low-light rooms. Spider plants and pothos are often recommended for low-light situations, and they do tolerate dimmer conditions better than many plants. But that tolerance does not mean a sheer improves their situation. If the window is already modest in size or faces east or north, adding a sheer can make conditions too dark for even these adaptable plants to grow well. A sheer makes sense on a large, very bright south window; it does not make sense on an already-limited east window where the plant needs every lux it can get.
Seasonal Sheer Strategy
Light is not constant through the year, and a sheer strategy that works in July can actively harm plants by November. Treating the sheer as a fixed installation rather than a seasonal tool is one of the most common light management mistakes.
In summer (May to September), the sun arc is high and intense at south and west windows. Use the sheer during the hottest part of the day, typically 11am to 3pm, and pull it back in the morning and evening. This protects sensitive plants from peak intensity while giving them access to the softer light of the shoulder hours when the risk of scorch is low.
In autumn and winter, remove the sheer entirely on all windows. UK winter light is already too reduced to afford any further reduction. A south window in December without a sheer delivers perhaps 3,000 to 8,000 lux at the glass on a clear day. Behind a sheer, that drops to 1,500 to 5,000 lux. Most tropical houseplants are already borderline in those conditions. The sheer makes it worse. Even plants that genuinely needed protection in July can handle a bare south window in November.
Spring is the transition period. Start with the sheer off as winter ends and the light builds. Add the sheer back when temperatures at the glass climb past roughly 25 degrees Celsius in direct sun, typically from late April at south windows. Watch for the first signs of bleaching or leaf curl on sensitive plants as your cue to put the sheer back up.
Alternatives to Sheer Curtains
A sheer curtain is not the only way to manage strong light at a window. Depending on the situation, other approaches may give you more precise control or more seasonal flexibility.
Frosted window film. Applied directly to the glass, frosted film blocks a fixed percentage of light year-round. Unlike a curtain, it cannot be removed seasonally. This is a good choice if you want a consistently diffused effect throughout the year, but it commits you to that level of reduction in winter when you would almost certainly prefer the full light. Best suited to spaces where a small reduction year-round is genuinely appropriate, such as a bathroom or a north-east window with brief direct morning sun.
External blinds or awnings. These block heat and light before it enters the glass, which makes them more effective than interior sheers for temperature control. A sheer inside the room catches light that has already passed through the glass and heated the air between the glass and the curtain. An external blind prevents that heat from entering in the first place. If overheating as well as light intensity is a concern for your plants, external blinds are the better solution.
Moving the plant back from the window. Light intensity drops with the square of distance. Moving a plant 60 to 90 cm back from the glass achieves a similar light reduction to a sheer curtain on many windows, without blocking the whole window for every plant in the room. This gives you the flexibility to leave sensitive plants further back year-round and move light-hungry plants to the glass in winter without touching the curtain at all.

Can I leave my sheer curtain up year-round?
In a UK home, removing it in autumn and winter is strongly recommended. A sheer in December can halve already scarce winter light and push plants into light starvation. Open fully from October through March, and use your judgment in April about whether the strengthening sun has reached the point where sensitive plants need the sheer back.
My plant is behind a sheer and still scorching. What is happening?
A dense tropical plant positioned close to the sheer may have leaves poking through or resting against the curtain. Those leaves receive full direct sun rather than diffused light, and they will scorch even though the rest of the plant is protected. Pull the pot back 10 to 15 cm from the fabric so every leaf is fully in the diffused zone rather than at the boundary of it.
Do sheer curtains reduce temperature as well as light?
