Most houseplant problems get blamed on watering. The actual culprit, in a surprising number of cases, is light. Insufficient light slows photosynthesis, which reduces the plant's ability to process water and nutrients, which then leads to the overwatering problems that look like root rot. Before adjusting your watering routine, check whether the plant is getting the light it needs. Here is how to read the signals.
Leggy, long-stemmed growth (etiolation)
This is the most unmistakable light-deficiency signal. The plant is stretching toward the nearest light source. New growth produces long internodes (the gaps between leaves) and smaller-than-normal leaves. A pothos that normally produces leaves every 3 to 5cm starts putting them every 15 to 20cm. A succulent that should be compact and rosette-shaped begins reaching upward.
Fix: move the plant closer to a window or add a grow light. Once the plant is in better light, the existing leggy stems do not shorten, but new growth will be compact again. Prune the leggy stems in spring to encourage bushier regrowth from the base.
Pale or yellow leaves (on the whole plant)
This is not to be confused with yellowing on a few lower leaves, which is normal ageing. When the entire plant or most of the canopy has pale, washed-out green or yellowing leaves, the cause is usually insufficient light. Without enough photosynthesis, the plant cannot produce the chlorophyll that creates leaf colour. The green literally fades.
Fix: move closer to the window. In many cases the colour begins recovering within 2 to 4 weeks of improved light. Do not add fertiliser at this stage. Fertiliser does not fix a light problem and adds unnecessary chemical stress.
Leaning strongly toward the window (phototropism)
All plants grow toward light to some degree. Extreme leaning, where the entire plant is at a visible angle toward the window, is a sign the light is inadequate for the plant's needs. The plant is compensating by maximising leaf exposure to the available source.
Fix: rotate the plant a quarter turn every 1 to 2 weeks to encourage even growth. Better fix: move the plant closer to the window so leaning becomes unnecessary. The rotation advice is often given without addressing the underlying cause.
No growth for months (in the growing season)
Some slow growth in winter is normal. No growth at all from April to September is a light problem. If the plant produced no new leaves from March to September despite being watered and fertilised, it is not receiving enough light to sustain active growth.
Fix: move the plant to a brighter position immediately. A grow light can be added if no brighter position is available. Resume fertilising only once new growth begins, not before.
Variegated plants reverting to green
This is a specific and very clear signal for variegated plants (marble queen pothos, albo monstera, Thai constellation, and similar varieties). The plant is producing all-green leaves because green tissue is more photosynthetically efficient and the plant is conserving energy. It is not a disease or a problem with the plant itself. It is an adaptation to low light.
Fix: move the plant closer to a bright window. Prune back the fully green stems to encourage the plant to produce new variegated growth once light improves.
Soil staying wet for weeks
This is an indirect signal. A plant in low light photosynthesises slowly, uses water slowly, and transpires slowly. If the soil is taking 3 to 4 weeks to dry out after watering despite being at room temperature, the plant may be in light conditions too dim for its needs. The wet soil then becomes a secondary problem because of root rot risk.
Fix: improve the light and allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Do not increase the watering frequency or change the potting mix until the light issue is addressed.

How do I know if my plant needs more light or if it is overwatered?
The signals overlap, but the sequence matters. If the problem started in autumn when day length shortened, it is almost certainly a light issue. If it started after you changed your watering schedule, it is more likely overwatering. Check the roots: healthy roots are white or cream; roots that are dark, soft, or smell bad indicate rot. If the roots are healthy and the plant is still declining, light is the more likely cause.
My plant gets bright indirect light all day. Why is it still showing light-deficiency signs?
Bright indirect light varies enormously in actual intensity. A room described as bright by human perception may be receiving 500 to 1,000 lux, which is below the threshold for many plants. Check with a phone lux meter app (Lux Meter, Photone) to confirm actual levels. The human eye adjusts to dim conditions quickly, making rooms feel brighter than they are.
Can too much light cause the same symptoms as too little?
Some overlap, yes. Pale or bleached leaves can indicate either scorching (too close to harsh sun) or chlorophyll loss from insufficient light. The difference: light scorch appears as crispy, bleached patches on the part of the leaf facing the light source. Light deficiency causes uniform paleness across the whole leaf. Bleached patches on the sun-facing side of the leaf point to too much intensity, not too little.
My plant was fine for two years and then started showing these signs. What changed?
The most common causes of sudden light deficiency in a previously stable plant: the seasons changed (autumn/winter light drop); a tree or building outside the window grew and is now casting shade; you moved furniture that is blocking the window; or the plant has grown larger and lower leaves are now in the shade of the upper canopy.
