Too Much Direct Sun: Signs Your Houseplant Is Scorching

Bleached patches and crispy edges are not always drought. Here is how to spot sun scorch, which plants burn fastest, and what to do once the damage is done.

Many houseplants sold as indirect light plants react badly to intense afternoon sun through south or west windows, and the damage often gets misread as something else entirely. Crispy leaf edges look like underwatering. Pale, washed-out colour looks like a nutrient problem. Understanding what sun scorch actually looks like saves a lot of guesswork and prevents the cycle of overwatering a plant that was never thirsty to begin with.

What Sun Scorch Looks Like

Sun scorch has a distinctive pattern that separates it from most other causes of leaf damage. The most reliable sign is bleached, white, or tan patches that appear on the side of the plant facing the window. The affected tissue turns papery and dry, and in severe cases it becomes almost translucent before fading to pale beige or white. Leaf edges and tips can go crispy and brown, especially on leaves that have been exposed over several days of strong afternoon sun.

The localised nature of the damage is the key diagnostic clue. Overwatering causes leaves to go yellow and mushy, usually starting at the base of the plant and spreading evenly. A nutrient deficiency tends to spread across the whole plant in a gradual pattern. Sun scorch is concentrated on the sun-facing side: leaves on the window side of the plant show it first, while leaves on the shaded side of the same plant can look completely healthy. If you rotate the plant and the damage shifts, that is confirmation it is a light problem.

Which Houseplants Burn Most Easily

Tropical foliage plants that evolved under a forest canopy are the most vulnerable. Monsteras, peace lilies, pothos, calatheas, ferns, and begonias all struggle with any sustained direct sun exposure. These plants are adapted to filtered or dappled light and their leaves lack the protective structures that sun-adapted plants use to manage heat and UV load. Even a few hours of direct afternoon sun through a south or west window can cause visible scorch within a day or two.

True sun-lovers are a different story. Cacti, succulents, and many herbs including basil, rosemary, and thyme evolved in open environments with full sun exposure and actively need direct rays to thrive. The distinction matters: a cactus on a south window sill is in its ideal environment, while a peace lily in the same spot will begin to show scorch within a week. When in doubt, check the light requirement on the plant label before placing anything in a south or west window.

Afternoon Sun vs Morning Sun

Not all direct sun is equal, and the time of day makes a significant difference. Afternoon sun through south and west windows is roughly three to four times more intense than morning sun through east windows. The angle of the sun in the afternoon hours means light travels through less atmosphere, arriving with higher energy. Morning sun through an east window is soft and relatively cool, which is why east windows are considered the safest for indirect light plants that can handle a small amount of direct rays.

Glass compounds the problem. A window pane concentrates heat rather than dispersing it, and the surface temperature on a south window sill in midsummer can exceed 40 degrees Celsius. Leaves resting against the glass or very close to it can burn from contact heat alone, separate from the light intensity. This is why the advice to move a plant back from the window is often more important than adding a curtain: distance reduces both light intensity and radiated heat.

How to Fix Sun Scorch

The first step is to move the plant. Pulling it back 60 to 90 centimetres from the window reduces light intensity substantially and removes it from the heat pocket near the glass. If moving it back is not possible, hanging a sheer curtain across the window diffuses direct sun into bright indirect light and drops the temperature near the sill significantly.

If the window direction is the issue, moving the plant to a north or east window is the more reliable long-term fix. North windows provide consistent low to medium indirect light year-round. East windows give gentle morning sun that most indirect-light plants handle without any scorch.

Leave the scorched leaves on the plant. The bleached areas are dead, but the rest of the leaf still contains chlorophyll and continues to photosynthesize. Removing leaves reduces the plant's energy budget at a time when it is already stressed. Once the plant is in a better position and producing healthy new growth, you can trim the damaged leaves if the appearance bothers you.

Resume normal watering once the plant is moved. Scorched plants are often overwatered by owners who assume the dryness or wilting is a moisture problem. Check the soil before watering and wait until the top few centimetres are dry. Do not mist the scorched areas: wet tissue on a damaged leaf is more prone to fungal problems and does not help the plant recover.

Will scorched leaves recover?

No. The bleached or whitened tissue is dead and will not green up again. However, once you move the plant out of the direct sun path, healthy new leaves will emerge and the plant will return to normal. Leave the damaged leaves in place until they are fully dead, as they still contribute some photosynthesis.

Can I put a succulent in full afternoon sun indoors?

Yes. Cacti and most succulents are adapted to full direct sun and handle intense afternoon light through south or west windows well. Even so, if a succulent has been in low light for a while, acclimatise it gradually. Move it into one or two hours of direct sun per day and increase over two to three weeks to avoid stress from the sudden change.

Does glass filter UV rays?

Standard float glass blocks most UVB radiation but lets UVA and the full spectrum of visible light pass through freely. It also concentrates heat, so the air and leaf temperature near a sun-facing window is significantly higher than the ambient room temperature. This is why scorch can happen through glass even though the UV reading is lower than outdoors.

How do I know if my window gets direct sun?

Use the shadow test. At midday, hold your hand about 30 centimetres above a sheet of white paper placed where the plant sits. A hard-edged, sharp shadow means the spot is in direct sun. A soft or fuzzy shadow means bright indirect light. No visible shadow at all means the spot is low light. South and west windows typically produce a sharp shadow for several hours a day in summer.

My plant is far from the window but the leaves still look pale. Is that too much sun?

Unlikely. Pale or washed-out leaves at a distance from the window are far more likely caused by insufficient light or overwatering than by sun scorch. Scorch patches appear on the side of the plant facing the glass and tend to be white or tan with a papery texture. General paleness throughout the plant, especially paired with wet soil or slow growth, points to low light or root stress. Try moving the plant closer to the window rather than further away.
