Weeping Fig Light Requirements: Why Ficus Benjamina Drops Leaves and How to Fix It

Ficus benjamina has a reputation for being dramatic. That reputation is earned. It will shed leaves when you move it, when a draft hits it, when you change your watering schedule, and sometimes apparently for no reason at all. Light is the single biggest lever you have, and understanding what it actually needs makes everything else easier to manage.

When any of those conditions change, the plant responds by shedding foliage it can no longer efficiently support.

This is not weakness. It is an efficient survival strategy. A plant that rapidly adjusts its leaf load to match available resources can redirect energy toward root growth and recovery. The problem for indoor growers is that homes are full of the exact disruptions that trigger this response: seasonal light shifts, heating and cooling systems, moves between rooms, drafts from open windows, and temperature drops near glass in winter.

Light changes are the most common trigger indoors. When ficus benjamina does not have enough light, it cannot sustain its existing leaf load. Small, fresh leaves emerging from the growing points means the plant has enough energy to invest in new tissue. It has matched its leaf load to the available light and is now building from that baseline. Second, the leaf drop slows to near zero. A completely healthy ficus benjamina in good conditions drops very few leaves. The occasional dropped leaf is normal, but the background rate should be minimal.

If you see new growth but still some dropping, the transition is in progress and the plant needs another week or two.
